Croeso i Benrhyn Llŷn / Welcome to the Llŷn Peninsula
Hirdre Fawr is centrally located on the northern coastline of the Llŷn Peninsula. On the map, the Llŷn is the crooked finger of land that projects out of north west Wales into the Irish Sea. It has a distinct identity as a bastion of Celtic history and heritage and continues to this day to be the stronghold of Welsh culture and language. Then there’s of course the scenery and its beauty – it’s stunning.
Llŷn is a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ on the strength of its exceptional coastline of coves, headlands, beaches and bays rich in wildlife. Today, they’re all interlinked by the Llŷn Coastal Path that form part of the All-Wales Coast Path. The breathtaking views you will encounter along the path are on their own worthy of a visit to the Llŷn. On a good clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the Wicklow mountain ranges of Ireland.
You can travel around the Llŷn pretty easily in your vehicle along single carriageway roads. However, to get to some of the more bespoke areas, you will need to navigate your way through narrow country lanes and possibly farm tracks, so you please take the upmost care.
Public transport is limited to buses and they travel pass the site fairly regularly apart from on Sundays. Please also check out the Llŷn Coastal Bus.

Culture and Language
The Llŷn remains a true stronghold of the Welsh language ‘Cymraeg’ where over 70% of the population of approximate 6,000 speak the language as their first language. The language is taught as the primary language in all schools. This abudnace of Welsh language and culture is a big part of what makes the area so special, and plays a big role in the area’s tourism industry.
Nearby Nant Gwrtheyrn or “the Nant” as it is locally referred to, is home to the National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre. It’s a magical place located in a former quarrying village near Llithfaen, some 9 miles away from Hirdre Fawr.
Nearby Towns and Villages to Visit
The Llŷn Peninsula boasts many interesting places you may wish to visit during your stay here at Hirdre Fawr. The market town of Pwllheli is regarded as the Llŷn’s capital and is home to a world class marina and offer a qood variety of shops and supermarkets.
You may also wish to visit other nearby villages such as Nefyn, Porthdinllaen, Abersoch, Aberdaron and Llanbedrog.
Further afield, you could plan a visit to Criccieth, Porthmadog, Harlech and Caernarfon.
